Any macadamia lovers out there will know that our supply has been a little unreliable over the past few months. Here’s the full story behind this year’s macadamia drama
We began the year feeling wonderfully organised — our entire annual requirement of certified organic Australian macadamias was booked with processors well ahead of time. But as harvest season approached, it became clear that our well‑laid plans weren’t as secure as we thought.
Across the entire growing region — both in NSW, where our usual supply comes from, and in Queensland — growers were hit with heavy, unseasonal rain at a critical seed‑set stage. The impact of this was extreme and severe. Our processors reported that the harvest from the local farms was down to around 10% of expectations. Many farmers found the crop so poor that it wasn’t even worth harvesting the nuts that did set. Instead, they focused their energy on orchard improvements for future seasons.
This is why our supply from June to now has been intermittent. When the processors have another couple of silos ready to crack-out, then we receive another delivery. We are now waiting on the last crack out of the season and still do not know how much of it will be allocated to us. We anticipate this last delivery in the next few weeks and it will be our last Australian macadamia stock until the 2027 harvest.
Of course, we have been searching high and low for alternatives throughout all of this, and have managed to secure some certified organic imported macadamias from Kenya.
It pains me to even say the words "imported macadamias"! Macadamias are OUR Australian nut, a national icon. How can we possibly have to bring them in from overseas? But this is the reality of this season, and we choose to make peace with the situation and keep moving forward.
We have tested the Kenyan macadamias and are pleased to say they’re genuinely good quality. They’ll be included in our Mixed Nuts from October, and available as a standalone product in the New Year.
And now for the good news: growers and processors are reporting that next year’s Australian macadamia harvest is shaping up beautifully.
