Our world seems to be getting more and more dominated by a few large powerful corporations and super-wealthy individuals.
These corporations are required by law, ironically enough, to prioritise financial profit over all other considerations - which is one reason why environmental protection and sound practice has had to be monetised. Otherwise there is no motivation for it to be adopted. Arguably our entire society is based on this prioritisation of financial gain over all else. Hence the focus on perpetual growth; 'bigger is better', and so on.
Small family-run businesses like ours have the opportunity to make a choice as to what our priorities are. The norm, and the expected, is to want to grow grow grow; in order to make more more more. We are exploring a different way - in which we find our perfect size and stay there. We prioritise the care and integrity we put into our work, products and relationships, and focus on finding that balance between making enough money to earn a living, and following our path of integrity and truth.
When you buy from small businesses instead of large corporations, you make a statement (because your dollar has power). You stand for your community and the possibility of a different focus. You may not actually be creating a new world, but you are certainly allowing for the possibility of its arrival. Unfortunately you may also pay a little extra, because the small businesses cannot avoid taxes and benefit from economies of scale like the multinationals.
